The L.P. Miller FIGHT Foundation, a humanitarian service learning group who helps those in need locally, nationally and globally, organized a Pet Parade and Awareness event with all proceeds going towards the North East SPCA building fund. Overall we had a great turnout, with 17 dogs and 2 cats participating.
Most animals were dressed up and we offered costumes to be borrowed as well. Animals and their owners walked a “cat walk” and received a treat bag at the end. The dogs showed off their talent or ability while the cats just showed their attitude!
Pet owners paid $5 as an entrance fee which helped pay for the treat bags and any extra money went to NESPCA. Money was raised through registrations and a silver collection for people who just wanted to watch. We also asked the NESPCA if they would be willing to allow for donations over $20 to receive an income tax receipt and they obliged so we did get some larger donations in the silver collection because of that.
Surprisingly, no rodeo clown was needed and we had no “accidents” or messes. However, we were prepared for those with doggy bags and wipes.
We advertised the event through social media — L.P. Miller Facebook page as well as the NESPCA, plus students sent out announcements through their Instagram & Snapchat. Our Leadership 30 class does a weekly events write-up in the Nipawin Journal as well as radio spots on TWO – yes Nipawin and area has TWO – radio stations!
We were able to raise $336.60 in registrations and silver collection. The event was such a success that we have decided to make it an annual event.
